I chose the Cyber Bootcamp because I wanted a career in Cyber Security and had not been successful in gaining a role despite 20 years IT experience and having recently gained CISSP certification. The program covered a broad spectrum of topics and was a great introduction to Cybersecurity. The classes were typically hands on and the weekly assignments served to reinforce new skills.
It was soon clear that to get the most out of the course we needed to actively participate and be prepared to challenge ourselves with learning new tools, some scripting and adopting the mindset of an attacker.
By the end, we had nine lab environments in Azure and four VMs set up locally.
The two projects required use to bring aspects of different skills together and in the case of the major project, the time challenge (8 days) and scope of work involved was a serious challenge. Two vulnerable machines with capture the flags activities plus the requirement to document all steps, [vulnerabilities] and exploits for the Red Team report; then be a Blue teamer, set up monitors and alerts to protect the systems and document all the necessary actions to remediate the vulnerabilities found. The third part was a packet capture and analysis with Wireshark and an associated report. So we had three reports, plus an associated Github repo and a [presentation] to the class and instructors on the last day.
The Virtual Demo Day that followed a few weeks later was a chance to present a polished summary to Industry professionals. I made a good impression with a few of them and was soon contacted. I landed a new role as a Cyber Security Consultant!
I chose to attend the program because I was looking to change my career, and hoping to work in the tech industry. It was a very tough 24 weeks program, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s a very rewarding industry with lots of potential, now I will always have a goal to work towards and enjoy what I do for living.
I’ve decided to go with [the] bootcamp because of the Sydney Uni support, I believe that really helped to improve my first job chances. As I come from a different [industry,] I’m pretty confident to say that this bootcamp helped to change [the] course of my life.
I attended because I wanted to expand my skillset before I graduated from my undergraduate degree at UTS. I was graduating in the midst of a pandemic so I thought there may not be as many jobs in the market or there may be more job seekers than usual.
Not only have I expanded my skillset, I have also grown in confidence immensely after this bootcamp. The job market did not turn out to be as bad as I thought it would be but my resume still got a competitive edge. So many companies have shown interest in my resume. I feel like my future is a little more secure now, job-wise.
Career services has helped me prepare for my interviews following the completion of my course.
It helped me gain confidence on the knowledge I had learned and build the skills required for my interviews.
I am so appreciative of the time taken to make sure that I was making progress towards starting my new career.
